The upward thrust of the Nano marine aquariums over the last couple of years are possibly the best of the worst ideas I’ve seen in some time. Don’t take what I say as a total negative to the things generally as I find them extremely appealing and own a few myself. My concern with them is nevertheless in the perception that tiny designer marine aquariums are for beginners and in reality they are NOT.
Concerns arise however when one looks at folk generally. There are 2 sorts of fish hobbyists the one that has interest, but is more concerned with the overall appeal of decor. For these hobbyist, anything beyond daily feeding and the occasional water change and clean they prefer to go no further. Then you have the hobbyist that has a zeal for the life he's caring for within that small cube of water. These keen hobbyist try to learn all they're able to as they need the life in their care to florish.
Nano tanks although aesthetically appealing, offer a wide range of Problems linked with this general mistaken belief that they are for anyone. This isn’t the case. For many Nano systems the instructions are quite complete as per the primary set-up and in a number of cases some good recommendations for beginner species for inhabiting the tank but beyond you are by yourself.
Herein lies the difficulty. Tiny marine tanks particularly anything under 20 gallons (Nano Tanks) are hard to maintain. In reality chances are you will be testing and doubtless adjusting water quality daily and 20 to 30 % water changes weekly. Easy jobs as feeding must be done with strict concern to over feeding as excess food debris is one gigantic avenue for nitrate and amonia buildup, which will have detrimental affect on the animals in the tank. Other issues can include temperature control and lighting and its influences on water temperate and its own cooling. These are all issues that go past the collusion need of a hobby fan who has interest but no eagerness.
Nano marine tanks can add fascinating decor to any design setting in your house. They are a wonder to watch and supply a glimpse of quiet undersea life but they're not for newbies. They offer high upkeep that to a non passionate hobbyiests will outweight the ornamental wonder of the tank itself. This of course in time leads to the desertion of the tank and the passing of the life that lived therein.
In closing, be careful when choosing a marine aquarium, even more so if you are new to the past-time. Evaluate yourself and take the time to understand the commitment that is essential to maintain marine life. All life should be respected, treated humanely and never taken for granted..
