At what age can a male dog breed?

My dog that still appears to be a puppy and his girlfriend will soon have cute puppies in tow. A male dogs interest in sex starts very early. A dog that has barely left puppy hood will draw laughter if the repeated efforts to mount a large female would fail. Male dogs would also show sexual interest to other male dogs.

Puppies would be seen humping and mounting the litter mates. Male dogs appear to be oversexed as if they cannot mount other dogs, they will try to mount other animals. Moreover, dogs will try their sexual act on the legs of humans. However, these are normal sexual actions of dogs. The humping, the mounting and the seemingly premature interest in sex is natures way of preparing this animal species for reproduction.

A dog owner would have different reasons for breeding and for not breeding the dog. Breeders would naturally breed the dog for monetary reasons. The prospect of holding cute puppies that look and behave lot like the pet would be reason enough for an owner to breed the pet. Another purpose of breeding the male dog is to have litter that will also garner blue medals just like their sire . Some dog owners though would prevent the dog from breeding especially if there are no potential dog owners and the poor puppies would just have to be put to sleep. Neutering is the option pet owners would take so that the pet would not produce puppies that can add to the number of homeless dogs. For these reasons, dog owners have to have an idea when the dog can be bred.

Attainment of sexual maturity is largely influenced by the size as well as the breed of the dog. The age when dogs become sexually mature varies from breed to breed. Commonly though puberty is attained when the dog is about 6 to 12 months of age.

Small breeds are thought to be precocious as they become sexually mature much earlier than large breeds . At six months, small breeds would show inclination to mate but large breeds would start to be sexually active at one year of age. Unlike small breeds that are ready to mate at six months of age, large breed of dogs would be interested in mating only when it is about a year old. Dogs must not be allowed to mate before the first birthday when the sperms are already fully developed.
