Dogs are seen vomiting once in a while. These four legged friends will be seen vomiting every once in a while. Dogs are known for their huge appetites. Dogs have this habit of wolfing down food. In the wild, hunted prey will be devoured by the pack in an instant. The habit of eating too fast was attributed to scarcity of food. Gulping down food is an ingrained canine habit as in spite of the food regularly provided by owners, dogs would still eat fast. This habit of eating too fast is one of the reasons why dogs vomit.

Dogs vomit to get rid of ingested substances that were not accepted by the stomach. Dogs can eat just about anything as they can easily get rid of substances not accepted by the stomach by eating grass to induce vomiting. The signs that the dog is about to upchuck the contents of the stomach is retching and heaving of the belly muscles. The dog will drool, make a low pitched sound and upchuck the contents of the stomach.

Dogs would be seen throwing up a yellowish frothy substance in the morning. This kind of vomiting occurs in dogs that did not have their dinner. However, aside from dietary indiscretion there are other reasons why dogs vomit and these reasons are often associated with serious and at times even life threatening concerns.

A dog that vomits repeatedly can rapidly get dehydrated. Moreover, it is possible that the dog is throwing up because it has ingested poisonous substances. Because of the dogs tendency to vomit, an owner would not be concerned if the pet is seen vomiting occasionally. But if the dog is vomiting three or more times in an hour and if the vomiting that is accompanied by diarrhea is making the dog weak, emergency medical treatment will be necessary.

To treat the dogs condition, it would be necessary to learn why the dog is vomiting. Vomiting that is associated with the dogs dietary indiscretion can be easily resolved at home with some first aid measures. Vomiting though is one of the dog illnesses that has no instant cure. A first aid treatment for vomiting is to fast the dog for at least 12 to 24 hours to give the upset stomach a chance to rest. A cup of water sweetened with a teaspoon of sugar can be given to the pet after the fasting period. If the electrolyte solution did not make the dog vomit, the pet can now be allowed to eat bland food like boiled rice and chicken.
